Netezza’s Not Dead: It’s Just Ascended

Netezza, the IBM-owned, hardware-accelerated data warehousing hybrid, is now frequently out there (GA) in the cloud on either IBM Cloud or AWS.

The surprising pivot to give a cloud-based Netezza was announced last thirty day period by IBM (which had earlier planned to get rid of it off.) Now it is a truth: days before on-premises help was slated to stop on June thirty.

(IBM acquired Netezza in 2010 for $1.7 billion. At the time, as we reported, Netezza had 350 big consumers such as Time Warner, Estee Lauder, United HealthGroup, Nationwide Coverage, NYSE Euronext and Virgin Media.)

IBM now promises shifting workloads to the cloud will be discomfort-cost-free.

“It’s not a migration—it’s a elevate and shift,” states Large Blue’s solution guide, Miran Badzak including: “nzbackup your equipment to IBM Cloud Item Storage or Amazon S3—nzrestore into your cloud data warehouse. Or, only operate nz_migrate. It’s about as drama-cost-free go to cloud as everyone can make it.”

Drama, earlier, had abounded, with shoppers and resellers left discouraged by the announced stop of help at short recognize, then an similarly surprising May well 2020 announcement that Netezza was getting specified a reprieve.

IBM seemingly invigorated by the ability to virtualise workloads with the assistance of Red Hat-designed instruments, in the meantime states Netezza innovation will now “continue at breakneck speeds”. (How’s that for a U-flip?)

(Badzak highlighted all the “hard function and ingenuity that is been on screen by our engineering group as they worked to convey Netezza to cloud. Using what utilized to be an exceptionally restricted coupling of hardware and software package and deploying it on a modular, commodity-hardware infrastructure is no easy task.”)

Hungry startups in the meantime are snapping at the heels of some of these chunky workloads. A most likely irritation: what they have been promising probable shoppers would be a clunky, highly-priced and sophisticated migration off the system now appears to be set to be very simple (for these but to make it…)

Firms unconvinced by new vacillation on IBM’s element could get a last moment closer glimpse at either Yellowbrick or SQream, which give versions on the concept: built-in software package and hardware appliances that slot into a data centre rack that can electrical power big DB workloads, with identical business integrations to Netezza for LDAP, SNMP, syslog, but arguably a host of improvements such as additional scalability and richer detail.
